Georgiana and I arrived at our family townhouse in London on the first Saturday in January. It was a blustery day, and the muddy roads had made our journey tediously long. Fortunately, I had dispatched Inglesby to town a few days before we left Pemberley. The consummate butler, he anticipated our wants with the supernatural abilities of a wizard.

Throughout our journey, I reflected on how unsatisfying our time in Derbyshire had been. Despite the lively conversations with my sister and Fitz, I found it taxing to have a house guest who so obviously did not wish to be with us. As for the six days spent at my uncle’s estate, the disrespect with which Georgiana was treated still rankled me, nor would I soon forgive the secret effort to select a husband for her.

And there was one more matter: I felt an unexpected yearning for the company of a lady who could never grace my home. I think often on my last conversation with Elizabeth that November morning when she brought a book to my sister. I did not realize it at the time, but I now believe she was flirting with me. Her manners are not those of the fashionable world, yet her easy playfulness is almost irresistible.

The letters Georgiana received from the Bennets, and most particularly from Elizabeth, were among the few pleasures of the past two months. In her correspondence, she described with great wit the various doings in Hertfordshire. I easily recalled her laugh and her fine eyes as I imagined her enjoying the celebrations of the season with her sisters and friends. My only complaint was that her most recent letter contained little news of the lady herself; instead, she wrote about books she had read and how they had enriched her life.
